Metas AS was started by Terje Torkildsen, Olav Rune Godø and Olav Birkeland based on ideas and technology developed at the Institute of Marine Research. Metas delivers systems for studying fish and its behavior, detection of oil and gas leakage as well as stationary real time environmental monitoring. These systems are either stationary at the seabed, floating in the ocean or on crawlers on the seabed. Systems with Windtec tanks have been deployed down to 6000 meters.

An example of their systems is the first node in the LoVe Ocean Laboratory. LoVe Ocean is a cabled ocean laboratory monitoring a highly productive area outside Lofoten and Vesterålen. The observatory is managed by The Institute of Marine Research with Equinor, FFI and others as partners. In Node 1 the Windtec housings are used for cameras and electronics. The node was put down in 2013 which means the housings have been subsea for close to 10 years except for a few interuptions for rebuilding and maintenance of sensors. The data is publicly avialbale at loveocean.no and love.equinor.com. Most recently this node have documented whales singing outside Lofoten and Vesterålen.

Through a partnership with iSeaMC, Metas can integrate a robotic subsea crawler with their other subsea asset integrity monitoring stations. The robot design is field-proven with more than ten years of operation in the deepsea. The latest Rossia 3000 robot is manufactured in cooperation with Metas and includes a control unit housed in Windtec carbon fiber housing. One of crawlers is called Bathybot and will be resident at 2400 meters depth for several years. It was deployed in February 2022 after extensive testing and even has it own Twitter account to report its findings, twitter.com/bathybot.

Metas AS chose carbon fiber housings to save weight in water and cost. Metas have delivered battery tanks weighing up to 120 kg dry, but in water they will be almost neutral. This eliminates the need for costly foam. It is sometimes also possible to extend the tank length to create the necessary buoyancy for free.
